Talk Nauvari and we visualize Madhuri mesmerizing us in ‘Humko Aajkal Hai Intezaar..’.Well, the Nauvari drape is a stunning ensemble that is mostly worn by Maharashtrian women and brides for festivals and wedding ceremonies respectively. As per the legends, it was during the Maratha rule that women had this responsibility of helping fellow male warriors and that is when Nauvari drape was introduced for that ‘male warrior’ resemblance.  Since then, the Maharashtrian saree draping style for the ‘easy movement’ became the traditional attire. One can spot several women wearing Nauvari sarees during major festivals such as Gudi Padwa and Ganesh Chaturthi in Maharashtra.

So, experimentation can always open new possibilities and you too can dress up like a Bollywood diva with a few styling tips and a step-by-step draping guide.

Styling Tips For Nauvari Saree

Apart from the customary Maharashtrian style, what differentiates the Nauvari saree outfit are the ornaments and accessories

Nath- The traditional Maharashtrian nosepiece in pearls and stone and typically in paisley shape perfectly gel with the Nauvari saree draping.

Belts- Look out for belts in intricate designs to add that modern touch.

Capes- Trendy blouses with cape shrugs or attached capes can look exceptional and royal.

Apart from these styling accessories, Kolhapuri chappals, chandrakor bindi, karnfool (paisley earrings), and vaaki (armlet) can enhance the appearance of a Nauvari drape.

Steps To Drape A Nauvari Saree In A Traditional Way

While draping a Nauvari saree you don’t need a petticoat but you can wear shorts or knee-length tights instead. Paithani sarees are the ones that are preferred for Maharashtrian saree draping techniques.

Begin Tucking

Take the saree from the inside column and wrap it, bringing it towards the right-hand side corner and making a knot. Leave the loose flap in front for now.

Front Pleats and dhoti

Start making pleats from the remaining part of the saree which will open at the right, unlike regular sarees. There will be a loop left that has to be brought over the pleats near the navel. Now take one-fourth section from the pleats and pull from the front to the back and make pleats at the back as well. Fold it in a way so that the border is visible. Tuck it at the back and you are ready to rock the Nauvari drape. Now, spreading the legs, pull out the fabric from the back pass it through the hanging flap at the front, and use a safety pin to secure it at the front. This forms the dhoti-style Nauvari saree at the backside.

Shoulder Pleats

Make 4 to 5 long pleats from the remaining part of the saree and hold them upright to straighten the pleats and place them on the shoulder. Now, remove the inner section from the front pleats, drape it tightly around the back, and tuck it to the side waist.

Nauvari sarees are draped in a style of dhoti and that is what provides Nauvari sarees with its characteristic and iconic look. KALKI Fashion provides a wide range of Maharashtrian sarees including Paithani sarees for accentuating your look with a Marathi saree draping style.
