Met Gala 2026: Indian celebrities steal the spotlight

Talk about the cloak attires, masked presence, or theatrical-inspired couture every Met Gala Indian look created a story and broke the internet. From Karan Johar’s debut look in Manish Malhotra’s creative couture to Ananya Birla’s cinematic attire, each outfit made a colossal impact at the event. Here we go, highlighting the most interesting couture that had a major moment.

Indian Celebs at Met Gala 2026

Karan Johar – Hats off to director Karan Johar’s debut impact. It seems the fashion form and Indian craftsmanship reached their pinnacle when he made an appearance in a Met Gala Indian outfit inspired by the painter Raja Ravi Varma. Designed by Manish Malhotra, the outfit featured a six-foot hand-painted cloak-like cape and some scenes like Lady with the Peach and Hamsa Damayanti. The cultural representation and rich Indian connection have stunned the fans.

Isha Ambani – Designer Gaurav Gupta’s saree worn by Isha Ambani, is garnering a lot of attention. The enduring Met Gala 2026 garment crafted by the designer featured 1800 carats of jewels (diamonds, emeralds, polki, and kundan) from the Ambani family collection. The gold tissue saree with a visually appealing sculpted cape overhead added depth and dimension. The art-like structured halo was in contrast with the soft tissue saree she wore. It took 50 artisans and 1200 hours to craft Isha Ambani’s saree with a rich embroidery technique.

Ananya Birla – There is a story behind every couture at the Met Gala 2026 this time. Ananya Birla’s narration is about the metallic face mask crafted out of kitchen elements like a steel spoon, boxes, bowls, and ladles. While the mask out of ‘desi bartan’ created a unique visual, the couture was equally captivating, which was styled by Rhea Kapoor. While the custom headpiece celebrated Indian kitchen aesthetics and culture to an extent, the black blazer couture was a unique fusion of art, Indian theme integration, boldness, gothic vibes, and cultural identity.

Maharaja and Princess of Jaipur – Princess Gauravi Kumari and Maharaja Sawai Padmanabh Singh of Jaipur completely made the fans reimagine what fashion is about. Gauravi’s Met Gala 2026 theme gown was a tribute to her grandmother, Maharani Gayatri Devi, which was crafted from a pink chiffon saree once worn by her Dadima. The saree gown by Prabal Gurung was adorned with uncut diamonds and pearls. The craft focus of the Maharaja was a blue velvet coat that looked exquisite and artisanal. Hand-embroidery on the ‘Phulgar’ coat took around 600 hours to be crafted. The siblings paid great attention to the Indian royal textile tradition at the New York red carpet event.

Manish Malhotra – Designer Manish Malhotra’s fashion statement was about high-energy, character, and new dimensions, along with integrating Indian craftsmanship. Mumbai’s landmarks and cinematic history were woven into his attire, and other highlights like royal zardozi work and chikankari made the couture a deeply creative and cultural narrative. The Bandhgala sherwani beneath the coat took 960 hours to be crafted. Fans loved the way he created ‘Mumbai dreams’ with his outfit.

Natasha Poonawalla – Custom white gown by Dolce & Gabbana was pure fun and drama as it blended art, fashion, and craft through a white resin flower chest piece. Her Met Gala Indian outfit is visually appealing and playful. She literally bloomed with her bold and white interpretation of fashion. Floral concept stole the heart and offered a high-fashion edge. The delicate paper-like structure looked stunning, and her orchid ensemble delivered a striking appearance at The Metropolitan Museum, New York City. Long dangling earrings added the finishing glam touch to the Met Gala look.

Sudha Reddy – Here is yet another living artwork and Indian heritage vibes through Hyderabad-based billionaire Sudha Reddy’s kalamkari-inspired ensemble. The masterpiece, rich in Indian heritage, was designed by Manish Malhotra which featured deep and meaningful floral motifs and intricate embroidery work. Her gown, titled ‘Tree Of Life,’ required 90 artisans to work for 3460 hours (approx.) to display such a powerful cultural expression at the Met Gala 2026.
